Our dental clinic is open and you can read our COVID-safe procedures here.

We have unfortunately had to temporarily stop our beauty treatments in line with Government regulations. All existing appointments will be rescheduled.

Why Hygiene Visits are Important

Why Hygiene Visits are Important

The appointment patients are most likely to cancel

When a patient needs to reschedule, the hygienist appointment is nearly always the first to go. It feels less urgent than a dentist check-up, and the benefits are less immediately visible than cosmetic treatments. This is a mistake that compounds over time.

Regular hygienist appointments are, clinically speaking, one of the most important things you can do for your long-term dental health. Here is why.

What a hygienist does that brushing cannot

No matter how diligently you brush and floss at home, there are areas your toothbrush cannot effectively reach. Calculus — also called tartar — forms when plaque mineralises over time and hardens onto the tooth surface. It cannot be removed by brushing. It can only be removed by a dental professional using specialised instruments.

Calculus harbours the bacteria responsible for gum disease. When it builds up below the gum line — which it invariably does over time without professional intervention — it causes chronic inflammation in the gum tissue that, if left untreated, progresses to periodontitis: irreversible bone loss around the teeth. Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults in the UK.

Your hygienist removes calculus from both above and below the gum line, professionally polishes the teeth to remove surface staining, and carries out a thorough assessment of your gum health at every appointment.

The systemic health connection

The evidence linking gum disease to systemic health conditions has grown substantially in recent years. Chronic periodontitis is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, poorly controlled type 2 diabetes, adverse pregnancy outcomes, and respiratory conditions. The mechanism is inflammatory — the chronic bacterial infection in the gums drives systemic inflammation that affects tissues elsewhere in the body.

This does not mean that having gum disease guarantees other health problems, or that treating gum disease will definitively reverse existing conditions. But it does mean that maintaining healthy gums through regular hygienist care is part of looking after your overall health, not just your teeth.

What happens at a hygienist appointment?

A typical hygienist appointment at Pennington Dental involves an assessment of your gum health — measuring pocket depths around each tooth, noting any areas of inflammation or recession — followed by professional scaling to remove calculus, and a thorough polish. Your hygienist will also give you personalised advice on your home care routine, including brushing technique, interdental cleaning, and any areas of concern they have noticed.

Appointments are typically twenty to thirty minutes. The experience is far more comfortable than many patients expect — particularly those who associate hygienist appointments with the vigorous scraping of their childhood. Modern ultrasonic scalers are gentle and effective, and most patients find the experience gentle and refreshing.

How often should you attend?

We recommend a hygienist appointment every six months for most patients. Those with a history of gum disease, or who are at higher risk, may benefit from more frequent visits — every three to four months. Your hygienist will advise on the right interval for you based on your gum health assessment.
