Your dentist will use a local anaesthetic to numb the area before drilling the affected tooth to clean the decay. An impression of the tooth will be sent to our dental laboratory who will create your beautiful inlay or onlay. In the meantime, your dentist will place a temporary filling to protect your tooth.

Once your inlay or onlay has been sent to us from the dental laboratory, you will come back so that the dentist can remove the temporary filling and permanently fit your new inlay or onlay.

Why do i need an inlay or an onlay?

During a dental check-up, sometimes we will spot a dental cavity or damage on the back teeth that is too great for a regular dental filling to cope with but isn’t so bad that it requires a dental crown or bridge. In these cases, the best treatment option is an inlay or an onlay.

An inlay is used when a repair is required in the centre of the tooth, or the flatter part. An onlay is used when the damage also affects the cusps of the tooth, or the raised parts, so this is a bigger restoration than an inlay.

What does the treatment for inlays and onlays involve?

Whether you require an inlay or an onlay, the procedure is very similar and you will require two appointments.

During the first appointment, your dentist will use a local anaesthetic to numb the area before drilling the affected tooth in order to clean the decay. While many people are worried about the use of a dental drill, we can assure you that the procedure is completely painless and extremely comfortable.

Once the tooth is clean and free from decay, your dentist will take an impression of the tooth that will be sent to our dental laboratory. This will be used to create a beautiful inlay or onlay that will perfectly fit your affected tooth and provide a seamless, highly aesthetic result. In the meantime, your dentist will place a temporary filling to protect your tooth.

Once your inlay or onlay has been sent to us from the dental laboratory, you will come back for your second appointment. This is where your dentist will remove the temporary filling and permanently fit your new inlay or onlay. This will be strong enough to protect the tooth from further decay and you will be able to eat as normal.

Will my inlay or onlay be visible?

Inlays and onlays at Pennington Dental are made by our trusted dental laboratory using the best dental materials available to ensure a strong restoration that will last many years. We offer aesthetic inlays and onlays that are tooth coloured and undetectable in the mouth. We also provide silver inlays and onlays that are visible but also functional. Your dentist will be able to discuss the merits of both types of restoration so that you can make the best treatment choice for your own needs and budget.
