We have unfortunately had to temporarily stop our beauty treatments in line with Government regulations. All existing appointments will be rescheduled.
If you have noticed your teeth looking a little duller than they once did, you are not alone. Teeth whitening is one of the most requested cosmetic treatments at Pennington Dental, and it is easy to understand why. A brighter smile can make a significant difference to how confident you feel, whether you are heading into a job interview, attending a wedding, or simply want to feel good about what you see in the mirror.
Patients in Stratford-upon-Avon and Kenilworth frequently ask us about the difference between professional whitening and the strips or kits available in pharmacies and online. The answer matters, and it could affect both your results and the health of your teeth.
In the UK, teeth whitening is a regulated dental procedure. Only registered dental professionals are legally permitted to provide whitening treatments using the concentrations of hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide that actually produce noticeable results. Over-the-counter kits must use much lower concentrations to comply with consumer safety regulations, which is why their effects tend to be minimal.
At Pennington Dental, we use Boutique Whitening, a professional-grade product available only by prescription from a dentist. This means you get the strength needed for genuine results, with the safety that comes from a regulated, clinician-overseen process.
Teeth become stained for several reasons. The foods and drinks we consume, particularly tea, coffee, red wine, and certain fruits discolour enamel over time. Smoking accelerates this considerably. The natural ageing process also plays a role, as enamel becomes slightly more translucent with age, revealing the yellower dentine beneath.
Professional whitening gel works by releasing oxygen molecules that break down these staining compounds. The result is a whiter, brighter shade that is entirely natural in appearance, not the artificial blue-white you sometimes see in celebrities, but a healthy, vibrant tone that suits your complexion.
We begin with a free consultation. You will meet one of our dentists to talk through what you like and dislike about your smile and what you are hoping to achieve. We check your oral health to confirm whitening is appropriate for you, if there is active decay or gum disease, we address that first.
Once you are ready to proceed, we take a digital intraoral scan of your teeth. There are no physical impressions or trays of dental putty, the scan is quick, comfortable, and produces a precise 3D model of your teeth that goes directly to our dental laboratory. Your bespoke whitening trays are fabricated from this digital scan, ensuring an exact fit.
While your trays are being made, typically around two weeks, we give you a prescription desensitising toothpaste to use twice daily. This two-week desensitising phase is an important part of our protocol. It prepares the teeth before whitening begins, significantly reducing the chance of sensitivity during treatment.
When your trays arrive, you collect them along with your Boutique Whitening gel kit. You wear the trays at night, as little as two hours is effective, though overnight gives the best results. The desensitising toothpaste continues to be used inside the trays alongside the whitening gel throughout the programme, providing an additional layer of protection against sensitivity.
We see you for a review appointment at four weeks to assess your shade and check everything is progressing well, and again at six weeks for a final review. Both appointments are included in the initial fee.
Teeth whitening at Pennington Dental is on offer at £299. This is an all-inclusive fee covering your initial consultation, your bespoke whitening trays, and your full Boutique Whitening gel kit, everything you need for a complete course of treatment. We occasionally run promotional offers, so it is worth checking our current deals when you enquire.
Compared to budget whitening options that require repeat purchases and rarely deliver meaningful results, professional whitening from a dentist represents excellent value for a treatment that genuinely works.
This depends largely on your diet and lifestyle. Patients who regularly drink coffee or red wine, or who smoke, will find the results fade more quickly than those who do not. As a general guideline, most patients choose to top up their whitening every six months using a single syringe of gel, which is why having your own bespoke trays is so useful. You keep them indefinitely and simply purchase top-up gel when needed.
When carried out by a dental professional using regulated products, teeth whitening is very safe. The most common side effect is temporary sensitivity, particularly to cold. Our Boutique Whitening formula includes desensitising agents that significantly reduce this risk. If you have existing sensitivity, let your dentist know during your consultation, we can tailor your whitening schedule accordingly.
It is important to note that whitening does not work on dental restorations such as crowns, veneers, or composite bonding. These will remain their original shade. If your natural teeth whiten considerably, we may recommend updating any visible restorations to match your new smile.
