Our dental clinic is open and you can read our COVID-safe procedures here.
We have unfortunately had to temporarily stop our beauty treatments in line with Government regulations. All existing appointments will be rescheduled.
Before patients commit to teeth whitening at Pennington Dental, they almost always ask the same thing: how long will this actually last? It is a fair question, and deserves an honest answer rather than vague reassurances.
The truthful answer is: it depends. Professional teeth whitening results typically last anywhere from six months to three years, with most patients seeing noticeable fade somewhere in the middle of that range. Here is what determines where you will fall on that spectrum and what you can do to push it as far as possible.
Whitening works by removing existing stains from within the enamel and dentine. What it cannot do is prevent new stains forming. Your teeth are continuously exposed to the same substances that caused staining in the first place, which means that over time, the colour will gradually creep back.
The main culprits are well known: tea, coffee, red wine, cola, and dark fruit juices. Smoking is a significant accelerator — tobacco staining is particularly tenacious and will undo whitening results faster than almost anything else. Certain foods like curries, tomato-based sauces, and soy sauce also contribute.
Age plays a role too. As we get older, enamel naturally thins slightly, meaning more of the yellowish dentine beneath shows through. This is a structural change that whitening cannot permanently reverse, though it can reliably improve it.
Good oral hygiene is the foundation. Patients who brush twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste, floss regularly, and attend hygienist appointments at least twice a year maintain their results considerably better than those with less consistent routines. Hygiene appointments remove the surface deposits and early staining that would otherwise accumulate over time.
Rinsing with water after consuming staining foods and drinks is a simple but effective habit. The idea is not to brush immediately after acidic drinks as this can damage softened enamel, but to rinse away the chromogenic compounds before they settle.
Using a whitening toothpaste in between treatment courses can help maintain surface brightness, though it is worth noting that toothpaste alone cannot replicate the effects of professional whitening gel.
When you have professional whitening with us, you keep your bespoke whitening trays permanently. These are made from a digital intraoral scan of your own teeth, so they fit precisely and can be used for top-up treatments whenever your shade needs refreshing.
Most of our patients purchase a single top-up syringe of Boutique Whitening gel every six months. The initial course at Pennington Dental, including your scan, trays, gel kit, desensitising toothpaste, and both review appointments is £299. Top-up gel thereafter keeps your results maintained very affordably.
We also include a prescription desensitising toothpaste as part of the initial programme, used for two weeks before whitening begins and throughout the treatment inside the trays. If sensitivity is a concern for future top-ups, we can advise on the right approach at your review.
Some patients experience temporary sensitivity during and immediately after whitening, particularly to cold. This typically resolves within 24 to 48 hours. During top-up treatments, this is usually even milder, as the enamel has adapted to the whitening process. If sensitivity is a concern for you, speak to your dentist, we can adjust the concentration and duration to minimise discomfort.
Professional teeth whitening is not a permanent change, but with sensible maintenance habits and periodic top-ups, you can keep a noticeably brighter smile indefinitely. Patients who attend regular hygiene appointments, top up every six months, and moderate their intake of staining substances enjoy results that essentially become self-sustaining over time.
Pennington Dental's Boutique Whitening programme runs for 4 to 6 weeks and is priced at £299 — designed to deliver the best possible results through a proven, measured approach rather than rushing the process. If your whitening results are looking a little faded and you would like to restore your shade, get in touch with the team at Pennington Dental in Stratford-upon-Avon or Kenilworth.
