Clear Aligners Vs Fixed

Clear Aligners Vs Fixed

Two very different paths to the same destination

Straight teeth and a well-aligned bite can be achieved in multiple ways. For adults considering orthodontic treatment, the two most common options are clear aligner systems, such as Invisalign, and fixed or traditional metal brackets and wires. Both can produce excellent results in the right cases. The best choice depends on your specific clinical situation, lifestyle, priorities and what works in your dentists' hands.

Aesthetics

This is where clear aligners have the most obvious advantage. Invisalign and Angel clear aligner systems are virtually invisible when worn — most people in your daily life will not notice them. For adults in professional settings, or anyone who feels strongly about the appearance of their teeth during treatment, this can be the deciding factor.

Fixed braces — metal or ceramic brackets bonded to the teeth — are visible. Ceramic (tooth-coloured) brackets reduce this considerably, but they are still more noticeable than clear aligners. For many adult patients, the visibility of fixed braces is enough to rule them out.

Comfort

Clear aligners are generally more comfortable to wear day-to-day. There are no brackets or wires to irritate the inside of the cheeks and lips, no sharp edges, and no wire change appointments that cause aching for several days. Each new set of aligners exerts gentle, consistent pressure on specific teeth, not like traditional wires that exert their force across all the teeth at once, compared to barely noticing the change between clear aligners.

Fixed braces cause more initial discomfort, particularly following fitting and after adjustment appointments. Emergency appointments for broken brackets or wire ends causing irritation are also occasionally necessary. Patients generally adapt over time, but the initial period is more uncomfortable than with aligners.

Compliance

This is the category where fixed braces have a clear advantage. Once fitted, they work continuously without any action required from the patient. Clear aligners, by contrast, must be worn for 20 to 22 hours per day to achieve the planned tooth movements on schedule. If aligners are regularly left out, for social occasions, through forgetfulness, or simply because compliance wanes, treatment extends and results are compromised.

For patients who are confident they will maintain the required compliance, aligners work very well. For younger patients or anyone who is honest with themselves about their compliance habits, fixed braces may deliver more predictable outcomes.

Clinical suitability

Fixed braces can address a broader range of orthodontic complexity than clear aligners, including very severe crowding, significant bite corrections, and complex rotations. Clear aligners have advanced considerably and can address a wide range of cases effectively, but there remain scenarios where fixed braces are the more appropriate clinical tool.

We will assess your specific case usinf our 3D scan and photographs to give you an honest recommendation based on what your teeth actually require, not simply what you might prefer aesthetically or even based on what we provide. If you need specialist Orthodontic care we will offer to refer you to a more experienced clinician.

Cost

The costs of clear aligners and fixed braces are broadly comparable for straightforward cases, though this varies by provider and case complexity. Clear aligner systems such as Invisalign and Angel are priced according to the number of aligners in the prescription — longer, more complex cases cost more.

The Pennington Dental approach

At Pennington Dental, we offer clear aligner treatment with both Invisalign and Angel Aligner. We have treated hundreds of aligner patients over 20 years. All treatment begins with a digital 3D oral health scan,  no impressions,  from which aligners are fabricated and treatment is planned digitally. Attachments are placed where clinically needed.

Our Silver and Gold packages include all your aligners, three removable retainers, a full course of Boutique teeth whitening, remote monitoring between appointments, and all clinical appointments throughout treatment. Finance is available through Tabeo.

We will give you a clear, honest assessment of whether aligners are the right tool for your case at your free consultation.
