Patients frequently come to us unsure whether they need teeth whitening, composite bonding, or both. This confusion is understandable, both treatments improve the appearance of your smile, both are minimally invasive relative to more extensive cosmetic options, and both can be carried out at Pennington Dental in Stratford-upon-Avon and Kenilworth but they address fundamentally different problems.
Teeth whitening addresses colour. If your teeth are a healthy shape and alignment but have become dull, yellowed, or stained over time from coffee, tea, red wine, smoking, or simply the natural ageing process, whitening is the appropriate treatment. It works by releasing oxygen molecules that break down staining compounds within the enamel, revealing a brighter, more vibrant shade of your natural tooth colour.
Whitening cannot change the shape of your teeth, close gaps, repair chips, or address texture concerns. It treats colour, and colour alone.
Composite bonding addresses shape, size, texture, and in some cases, colour. A tooth-coloured composite resin is applied directly to the tooth, sculpted by your dentist in the chair, and hardened with a curing light. In a single appointment, bonding can repair chips, close small gaps, lengthen short teeth, improve the shape of misshapen teeth, mask surface discolouration that whitening cannot address (such as white spots or fluorosis marks), and create a more harmonious smile overall.
Composite bonding can also change the apparent colour of teeth, but it is important to understand that the composite will be shade-matched on the day of your appointment. This is why we always recommend whitening first if patients are interested in both treatments, you achieve your desired whitened shade first, and then the composite is matched to that brighter shade.
A simple way to think about it: if your main concern is that your teeth are not white enough, start with whitening. If your concern is the shape, size, or texture of specific teeth, chips, gaps, unevenness, composite bonding addresses this. If you want both a brighter shade and improved shape, whiten first, then bond.
The order matters. Whitening after bonding will whiten your natural teeth but not the composite, creating a colour mismatch between your bonded teeth and the rest of your smile. Whitening first, then waiting for the new whiter shade to stabilise and then matching the composite to your new shade, avoids this entirely.
Teeth whitening at Pennington Dental is £299 using Boutique Whitening, following a tried and tested 4 to 6 week programme. This all-inclusive fee covers your digital intraoral scan, bespoke whitening trays, gel kit, prescription desensitising toothpaste, and both review appointments. Composite bonding is priced per tooth depending on the complexity of work required, your dentist will provide a full estimate at your consultation.
If you are considering both treatments, the order matters. Always whiten first, composite is shade-matched after whitening so that everything is colour-consistent. Whitening after bonding will whiten your natural teeth but not the composite, creating a mismatch.
